I think that often we look at the front of the package too much and the back not enough. It is so much faster to go through the store and grab the stuff that says "35% less fat" or "1/3 less sugar", but that information never seems to be all it cracks up to be...

Making Healthy Choices
I think one of the scariest things for me, as a mom, is making sure not only that my son gets all the nutrients he needs, but also learns to EAT the right things.
I think of the most troublesome things for me was watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution a while back and seeing the sad state that our children's school lunch programs and nutrition education. I think what was one of the most disturbing things was while in a classroom, all the children could identify a chicken nugget and a french fry but things like tomatoes, potatos and broccoli were not on their radar.
The next had to have been the milk selection available, grape and strawberry milk that was so loaded with sugar that it was WORSE THAN SODA.
In my own experience, with the children at my son's daycare, I see some of the snacks that teachers have brought in to share with the students as well as what parents send themselves, and that is worrisome. I have seen my son given Captain Crunch as a "snack" before he was even 2, a young girl eating powdered donuts for breakfast, and chips and hostess cakes for 2 year olds at lunch. I don't want to knock parents choices because I know how it is to be busy, so here we'll try to find better alternatives and choices that can be made in the grocery store, before the not-so-good stuff even makes it home.
